Gouverneur, NY

Gouverneur is the gateway from the south to St. Lawrence County. This rural village has a history as a mining town. The surrounding area is a rock hound’s dream, with road cuts where billions of years of geological time can be seen. A couple of quarries still operate in Gouverneur today for marble, talc, and zinc. The Gouverneur Museum houses an extensive mineral collection and local mining exhibit.

Gouverneur is also the home of the Gouverneur-St. Lawrence County Fair held the end of July or beginning of August each year. The Fair includes agricultural exhibits from dairy to cattle, rabbits to chicken, as well as a midway, games, food, harness racing, grandstand entertainment and demolition derby. There is a flower and vegetable show, quilt show, and the maple producers “shack” serving pancakes with fresh St. Lawrence County maple syrup and maple cotton candy.

There are a number of Amish farms around the Gouverneur area, especially along State Routes 812 and 58. Route 812 north toward Ogdensburg passes through the village of Heuvelton, home to Pickens General Store, which carries a wide variety of Amish made products, as well as products the Amish use in their everyday life.

In the summer Gouverneur hosts summer concerts in the park as well as Fourth of July Parade. There is local lodging and restaurants in Gouverneur and the surrounding area including the Clearview Motel with Jacuzzi suites and the Mullin’s Family Restaurant next door or Lawrence Manor Victorian-styled bed and breakfast and motel, with Greg’s Restaurant less than a block away. The Oswegatchie River Lodge and the Beaver Creek Country House Lodge offer unique opportunities for a family retreat. These vacation homes are created by Dale Lehmer who reclaims building materials from old barns and structures and creates magnificent, comfortable homes with natural materials as the feature. They can be rented by the night, the week, the month, or the season.

Kinney Drug Store Corporate headquarters are in Gouverneur. This drug store has been in business in the North Country, from the St. Lawrence River to the Vermont border for more than 100 years, taking care of residents and visitors. One of the County’s industrial parks is also located in Gouverneur, offering plenty of space for new and growing industries.
