Potsdam Summer Festival

For four decades, alumni, friends and families have embraced Potsdam for their “official” kick-off to summer the 2nd weekend in July. A portion of Market Street is blocked off with an outdoor stage erected for three days of music, entertainment and fun.

Merchants in the downtown and outer Market Street celebrate with special deals during the sidewalk sales which start on Thursday. Children’s activities and special events take place during the three-day festival around the village.

Saturday is highlighted by an Antique Car Show and a Craft Show in picturesque Ives Park on the banks of the Raquette River. A parade is held in the late afternoon, followed by the famous “Run to the River.” The Potsdam Fire Department has an internal competition where they race from the Fire House on Main Street to the Fall Island Bridge, hook up hoses and discharge water into the River. Onlookers cheer on their local volunteers, and are cooled from the spray on the hot summer days.
