St. Lawrence Fishing Communities - Massena, NY
The Massena area offers more than the majestic St. Lawrence for fishing opportunities. The Grasse and Raquette Rivers flow through the village offering some of the best small river angling anywhere.
The Robert Moses State Park offers a dramatic view of ocean going cargo ships passing through the Eisenhower and Snell Locks. A boat launch, picnic areas, and campsites are available as well as a visitors’ center.
Wilson Hill Island, Croil Islands, and Long Sault Islands at Massena offer excellent smallmouth angling. The bays between Wilson Hill Island and the Massena intake dam are popular northern pike areas. Walleyes and Muskie are also found in these areas.
At the Robert Moses State Park is the Barnhart Island Marina on Beach Road. The marina offers docks, ramp launch, fuel, mooring, water and pump-out facility, electric, and marine supplies.
Massena is one of the larger communities in St. Lawrence County, and offers many shopping and dining options. Fishing guides in this area include Let’s Go Fishin’ with Capt. Ed Reyes; All American Angler with Jerry and Marcy Laramay and Muskie Magic Charters with Capt. Don Lucas. The St. Lawrence Centre Mall is anchored by Bon Ton and JC Penny with a modest food court and niche shops and hair salons. Downtown there are several chain restaurants, stores, lodging and smaller diners with good home-cooked food.
The Raquette River in this area is teeming with walleye, bronzebacks. In addition to northern pike, and muskie, the area offers a variety of pan fish.
If you intendent to fish on portions of the rivers that cross into the St. Regis Mohawk Territory in neighboring Akwesasne, non tribal members will still need a valid NYS fishing license and must adhere to all NYS fishing regulations.
