Remington Arts Festival

1st Weekend in October

Old-time Dressups

Visitors will stroll back in time to the 1880s and enjoy artistic, musical and historical activities as conducted in the era of famed artist Frederic Remington, who was born and raised in the Canton, NY area.

Some of the events include:

  • A 5K run weaves past Remington “places” in Canton.
  • A featured Art Show in the village park celebrating art excellence in the North Country.
  • A student art competition
  • Children’s fun activities of the period
  • Horse drawn carriage tours of the village
  • Farmer’s Market
  • Special concerts and film festival
  • People in period costume, demonstrations, food, fun and music

Thursday, Oct. 5

  • 2 p.m. Frederic Remington’s Nocturne Works
    Lecture by D. Daniel O’Connor, professor emeritus, St. Lawrence University
    Location: Silas Wright House, 3 East Main Street, Canton, NY
  • 7 p.m. Festival Film Forum: “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance”
    Directed by John Ford, starring John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart and Lee Marvin
    Location: American Theater, Main Street, Canton, NY

 Friday, October 6

  • 2 p.m. Exhibit Opening/Presentation
    A display of the Collier Publication Covers: Remington’s earlier works
    Location: St. Lawrence County Historical Association, 3 East Main Street, Canton, NY
  •  7 p.m. Featured Musician: Rosin and Rhyme
    TAUNY awarded musicians, Donny Woodcock and Bill Smith
    Location: Unitarian Universalist Church, 3 ½ Main Street, Canton, NY

 

Saturday, October 7

  • 9 a.m. Remington 5K Run
    Begins at Remington Gravesite
    Location: Evergreen Cemetery, Intersection of State Routes 11, 68 and 310
  •  10 a.m. Bus to Remington Museum
    View the numerous and varied collections of Frederic Remington at the Art Museum in Ogdensburg.
    Location: Bus departs from the Canton Village Green Park, Main Street, Canton, NY
  • 10:30 a.m. Student Art Competition Awards and Reception
    Location: Canton Free Library, Park Street, Canton, NY 
  • 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Art Show in the Park
    Multimedia art forms and vendors
    Location: Canton Village Green Park, Main Street, Canton, NY. (Rain location, Unitarian Universalist Church, 3 ½ Main Street, Canton, NY)
  • 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Exhibit – Continued display of Collier Publications
    A display of the Collier Publication Covers: Remington’s earlier works
    Location: St. Lawrence County Historical Association, 3 East Main Street, Canton, NY
  • 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Featured Artist – Linda Jackson
    TAUNY awarded Mohawk traditional basket weaver, demonstrates and shows art of traditional basket weaving.
    Location: Canton Village Green Park, Main Street, Canton, NY 
  • 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Chicken and Chili Barbeque
    The Canton VFW Post 1231 offers chuck-wagon fare to satisfy festival goers
    Location: Canton Village Green Park, Main Street, Canton, NY
  • 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. “Remington’s Canton” Historic Tours
    Meet in front of Cuca’s Restaurant on Court Street, Canton and the Presbyterian Church on the Village Green Park 
  • During the Day
    TAUNY Northern Forest “Ways of the Woods”
    Walk through the traveling exhibit located inside an 18-wheeler which displays scenes from the Northern Forest region of Maine, New Hampshire, and New York. Live entertainment will also be ongoing while the exhibit is open.
    Location: Willow Island, across from TAUNY, 2 West Main Street, Canton, NY
  • During the Day Entertainment in the Park
    Barbara Heller, folk singer; 5th Edition, jazz ensemble; and Stringfolks, folk group.
